Welcome to this information portal for the residents of Steep.

The image of the locked gate above has come to symbolise the feelings of those who object to the proposed development of the Allotment land on Church Road in Steep. The land is owned by the residents of Steep but, without consultation, this land is to be developed and not for the benefit of residents. Objectors want the land restored to residents who can then democratically decide its future use. That decision would entirely benefit the residents and not simply put money into the pocket of a commercial developer.

Just to be clear, the objectors are not saying that the land should be kept as an un-mowed field. Objectors share the view that we need a village centre, but do not feel that a dense housing development is the answer. Hitherto some excellent proposals have been put forward. These proposals would afford residents with a village amenity, allotments and excellent recreational space. These options should be re-visited in a truly democratic process, before any planning application is submitted, by means of a proper and lawful consultation in full and complete compliance with the Gunning Principles. As part of this process, it is imperative that the Parish Council comply with the 5th Nolan Principle of Public Life namely “Openness – Holders of public office should act and take decisions in an open and transparent manner. Information should not be withheld from the public unless there are clear and lawful reasons for so doing”.

This website enables you to make your objections known to the organisations who can stop the proposed commercial development of the land to the south of Church Road i.e. the Allotment land and the War Memorial land –owned by you. Details of how to make your voice heard can be found on the SDNPA Planning tab above or by clicking here.

Details of the investigation carried out into the conduct of Steep Parish Council with respect to the Allotment land are available on the ‘Investigation’ tab above and by clicking here.

An electronic petition is being raised to demonstrate opposition to the proposed development. The results will be shared with Steep Parish Council and also elected representatives at higher tiers of government. You can access the petition on the menu above or by clicking here.
